What is a Solar Cell?
A photovoltaic cell, or solar cells, converts sunlight directly into electricity. When these cells are connected electrically and packaged into a frame, a module---solar panel--- is formed. It is used to generate electrical power for commercial and residential uses.
Although we can harness energy from the Sun to generate electricity, each solar panel can only generate a very limited amount of power. Thus, an installation often comprises several solar panels. A photovoltaic system typically includes an array of solar panels, an inverter, and sometimes a battery and interconnecting wiring. Some recent models even come with concentrators, in which light is focused by lenses or mirrors into a smaller array of cells, allowing the use of solar panels in a cost-effective way.
